Guanacaste is a mecca for Triathlons. Why you may ask? Well, the ocean is around 80°F all year round, the roads are flat and fast and go on and on and there is running on beaches, through tropical forest and every day the sun shines. What more could a triathlete ask for except a Personal Best?
Guanacaste sees a number of local Triathlon events from the Coopenae Cup in Playa Hermosa & Playa del Coco to the Albu Sports Triathlons in Carillo and Playa Panama. You will typically find that an event is happening every other month, whether it be a Triathlon event offering sprint and Olympic events, duathlons or swimming and running, or just a 5-10K run.
Over the past 3 years, Playa del Coco has seen the Ironman 70.3, sending many international athletes to the World Championships. It was awarded one of the best swims in the Ironman competition, however, due to the local topography a lot of pros did not like the one climb onto the flats, however, this helped the locals qualify.
The Coco area is known as a great destination for events as the locals love to come out with their drums, trumpets and loud voices and cheer on the competitors. The area really comes to life when an event like these happens and this was no more seen than in 2017 at the first Ironman 70.3 event in Costa Rica.
It’s unsure whether we will see the event in 2020, however, if for some reason we don’t, we will certainly see a lot of local events happening and Villa Buena Onda will be around to cheer all athletes and even provide incredible spa services and an amazing stay.
