Wildlife at Villa Buena Onda
One of the most memorable parts of staying at Villa Buena Onda is experiencing Costa Rica’s incredible wildlife. While every day brings something new, guests are often treated to sightings of monkeys, iguanas, tropical birds, butterflies, and other native species right on the property.
Howler Monkeys
Of the four monkey species found in Guanacaste, howler monkeys are the ones guests are most likely to encounter at Villa Buena Onda. Their powerful calls can often be heard echoing through the trees in the early morning and late afternoon. Watching a troop move through the canopy is a uniquely Costa Rican experience.

Iguanas
Large green and black iguanas are common throughout the property. These fascinating reptiles can often be seen sunning themselves on branches, climbing trees, or relaxing near the gardens and pool areas.

Tropical Birds & Butterflies
The villa’s lush gardens attract a variety of colorful birds and butterflies throughout the year. Guests frequently spot scarlet macaws, parrots, motmots, kiskadees, hummingbirds, and many other species that call Guanacaste home.

Marine Life
Just minutes from Villa Buena Onda, the waters of the Gulf of Papagayo offer incredible wildlife encounters. Depending on the season and excursion, guests may see dolphins, sea turtles, tropical fish, manta rays, and even humpback whales.
Sloths
Sloths live in the region but are much harder to spot than monkeys or iguanas. While they occasionally appear near the villa, guests are more likely to encounter them during guided nature tours and wildlife excursions.

Coatis
These curious relatives of the raccoon occasionally make visits to the property, especially during quieter evening hours. Traveling in small groups, coatis are known for their long tails, playful behavior, and inquisitive personalities.
